Goat Turf Grows to $100,000 in Monthly Revenue Using SingleOps

Key Takeaways

In July of 2018, Tyler Burnett established Goat Turf with the goal of providing quality artificial turf to customers in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and the surrounding areas.

SingleOps has helped the business stay efficient as they have experienced tremendous growth in the last nine months

Investing in efficiency is Goat Turf’s secret to growth, recently achieving over $100,000 worth of monthly sales.

When Tyler Burnett started Goat Turf in 2018, it was no surprise. Tyler had been in the lawn care business for practically his entire life. “I started cutting grass at an early age,” he said, “When I was 15, I got a lawnmower, a weed-eater, a blower, and a trailer and just started growing a lawncare & landscaping business.”

“A guy asked me if I could turf his entire backyard because he knew I had been in the landscaping business. I did some quick research, realized a need in the local market and I told him, ‘Yes.’”

When he went to college, Tyler stopped working in the lawn care industry to focus on his college baseball career. After college, he spent time getting experience in other industries. Ultimately, Tyler felt somewhat unsatisfied with his work situation, so when the opportunity to start a turf business presented itself, he took it almost instantly.

“I just wasn’t thrilled and made the leap to leave. A guy asked me if I could turf his entire backyard because he knew I had been in a landscaping business. I did some quick research, realized a need in the local market, and I told him, ‘Yes,’” Tyler explains the unique way he entered into the industry.

“In March we did $101,000…”

That was back in July of 2018. Today, Goat Turf is one of the fastest growing turf companies in the Nashville area. They raked in over $100,000 just last month. Tyler says one of the keys to their success is his attention to detail, “In March we did $101,000. I try to be as organized as possible. I want to know how my estimated and actual margins compare on each project.”

Tyler started trying out different turf management software to help him stay organized, but none of them satisfied Goat Turf’s needs. When he came across SingleOps, he decided to give it a go. “I started trying it and everything went really smoothly. We made some quick tweaks for the things I wanted it to do and it’s just been a great ride so far.”

Quick and accurate job costing is one of the biggest things I like about it.”

“Quick and accurate job costing is one of the biggest things I like about it.”

“It’s easy for my Project Manager to input actual quantities onsite when they complete a job. They just have to press ‘complete’ and verify the quantities. Quick and accurate job costing is one of the biggest things I like about it,” Tyler says. He needs accurate costing so that he can give a fair price to his customers while still being as profitable as possible. He explains, “I love being able to see my unit cost, see my price, and set my margins accordingly.”

Efficiency is extremely important to Tyler, so the way SingleOps streamlines information is valuable to him. One of his favorite aspects of the application is the proposal template, “I click it and I’ve got all my item groups together and broken down. I can make a quote in about 5 minutes.” From there, Tyler can send a quote to his customers right away from any device. The mobility of the SingleOps application is perfect for green industry professionals who are always on the go.

One of Tyler’s goals for the near future is to get even better at making quotes. He says, “As we get more comfortable with the system, we want to make accurate quotes quickly and close the deal onsite. Nobody does that.”

“If someone says, ‘Hey, is there any chance you can do this next week?’ I have the ability to review my inventory and schedule and give a quick answer.”

Another aspect of SingleOps that helps Tyler stay organized is the inventory tracker, which he started utilizing a few weeks ago. “I think it’s going to help us be very prepared,” he explains that SingleOps has effectively helped him create a just-in-time inventory system for Goat Turf. His customers experience the benefits too, “If someone says, ‘Hey is there any chance you can do this next week?’ I have the ability to review my inventory and my schedule and give a quick answer.”

Goat Turf has a bright future ahead. They plan on expanding their service offerings and adding new team members, with SingleOps laying the foundation for even more growth. “We’re getting to the point where I can have crew number two and still keep everybody organized,” right now Goat Turf only operates with one crew. “I’ll be able to determine the profitability of one crew versus another, I think that’ll be a very useful tool,” says Tyler.

“We’re working on the process of kicking off a maintenance package. I think SingleOps will help keep track of what has and hasn’t been serviced and what’s on the schedule,” says Tyler.
